My Journey
I've Always Been a Teacher
A career of translating complex ideas into meaningful human connection.
Long before I stood in front of a college classroom, teaching shaped the way I approached communication.
As a bilingual journalist — anchoring the evening news at Univision 40 and covering two U.S. presidential elections — my responsibility was to explain complex issues clearly and accurately, so families could make informed decisions in the language they trusted most. Every story was a lesson.
In public affairs, on Capitol Hill and in state government, I helped communities understand the policies shaping their lives: healthcare, voting rights, veterans’ education. In nonprofit leadership, I translated research into action, humanizing public policy through real stories. And as a consultant at Coscia Communications, I help organizations communicate with clarity, empathy, and purpose, from media training to brand identity to multicultural strategy.
Today, as an educator at William Peace University, I have the privilege of helping students develop those same skills while continuing to learn alongside them. I often say: “Don’t just tell them — show them.” They, in turn, push me to explain not only what works, but why.
The roles have changed. The audiences have evolved. The mission has not. I’ve always believed communication is, at its heart, an act of education.
That belief is what brought me to the Integrated Marketing Communications MA program at UNC Wilmington. After twenty years of practice, I became a student again. The program gave me the theory, research methods, and ethical frameworks that turn field experience into expertise, and this portfolio documents that transformation, organized into three themes that reflect how communication problems actually arrive: as questions of strategy, ethics, and storytelling.
I hope you will read it as I designed it: one professional philosophy, supported by eight pieces of evidence. Start with the theme that matters most to you or begin with Theme 1 and follow the narrative arc.
This portfolio marks the close of one chapter and the opening of another. As I carry what I've learned at UNCW into what comes next. Whether it's the classroom, the consulting table, or wherever complex ideas need translating, I hope you'll do more than read this story. I hope you'll be part of the next one. Let's connect.
My Philosophy
“Communication is at its best when it helps people learn, connect, and act with informed confidence.”
